Whispers of Terror would not work too well on the TV. It is, however, perfectly suited to audio, as it is a story about the medium of sound.
The Doctor and Peri arrive at the Museum of Aural Antiquities, a storehouse of sound recordings. However, their visit coincides with a murder and strange changes made to some of the archived material.
As usual, the Time Lord and his assistant soon become suspects. But for once, they are not on their own. It seems that, as the real culprit goes about its business, they might be facing an enemy made from pure sound.
Is Beth Pernell all that she seems to be? What really became of Visteen Crane? And can the Doctor really defeat a creature made from sound?
It's hardly surprising that this story has been released so early in the Big Finish catalogue, as audio is the perfect medium for this tale. This must have been the kind of story Gary Russell was planning when he put his first proposal to the BBC. And it works very well, much better than it could have in a visual medium.
You would think that with a story so much about sound, that Colin Baker's Doctor would come across as loud as he did on TV and at first it seems these fears might be realised. But he soon settles down and turns in an excellent performance. As for Nicola Bryant, it's like she's never been away, so easily does she slip back into character as Peri.
The supporting cast are on good form too, the rich tones of Peter Miles as Curator Gantman standing out to anybody who has seen Genesis of the Daleks more than once. Lisa Bowerman is also excellent as the nasty Beth Pernell, a definite change of pace from her usual portrayal of our favourite archaeologist, Bernice Summerfield.
This is an intelligent and thoughtful tale, playing to the strengths of cast, crew and medium. Absolutely superb.
