LAND OF THE DEAD
by Stephen Cole

Reviewed by Mark Simpson

Cover by Peri GodboldI've always been a big fan of the 5th Doctor, so it's great to hear him paired with another favourite, companion Nyssa in this excellent entry to the ongoing audio adventures.

Landing in the frozen Alaskan wastes, the Doctor and Nyssa are surprised to find a large house among the snow. Inside are a diverse group of people, some of whom are struggling with the baggage of their pasts.

Millionaire Shaun Brett has created a strange house, including a room full of prehistoric bones found nearby. But when those bones start coming to life again, the Doctor realises that something is very, very wrong.

What secrets still lie buried in the permafrost outside the house? Can the Doctor find a way to defeat the bone creatures, or will an age-old threat be released upon an unsuspecting world?

This play is almost like real time travel. Like stepping back seventeen years into the past. That is because the sparkle between Peter Davison and Sarah Sutton is just as it was back in 1983. It is like the two of them have never been away.

Land of the Dead has a small supporting cast, but it's one of quality. Prime among these, in my opinion, is actress Lucy Campbell as designer Monica Lewis. She makes the most of the lines she is given by Stephen Cole's script and makes a wonderful substitute companion, as the Doctor and Nyssa spend large parts of the story apart. It's a shame she couldn't have joined the TARDIS crew.

The story itself is intriguing, mixing betrayal, obsession and an interesting and powerful group of monsters. The near invulnerability of the bone creatures makes you wonder from time to time if our heroes really will get out of this one.

An instant favourite, this is a must hear for other fans of Peter Davison's portrayal of the Doctor.
