WINTER FOR THE ADEPT

Cover by Clayton HickmanWinter For The Adept is an intriguing tale. With the Doctor missing for most of part one, it's up to Sarah Sutton and the guest cast to carry the early part of the story, and they acquit themselves well.

When the Doctor attempts a teleportation experiment within the TARDIS, Nyssa finds herself alone in the snowy Swiss Alps. Seeking shelter until the Doctor arrives, she stumbles across the Tremayne Finishing School For Girls.

But all is not well within the school. A poltergeist is at work and other, more sinister forces are gathering in the shadows, ready to spill forth into our dimension.

Why is telepathy so important? What roles does fate have in store for Lieutenant Sandoz and Mademoiselle Maupassant? And can the Doctor solve these mysteries in time to save Earth from a deadly invasion?

Peter Davison really hits his stride in this story. Most people, Davison included, thought his Doctor only came into his own on TV in The Caves of Androzani, the 5th Doctor's swan song. Well this shows that he has plenty more to give, turning in a superb performance. And he is ably assisted in this by Sarah Sutton, who again proves there was more to her character than we've seen before.

Foremost among the supporting players is Peter Jurasik, most famous for his portrayal of Londo in Babylon 5. Here he gives a very good performance and a very unfamiliar voice to his character, though sometimes you can just hear Londo peeking through. However, it does not harm his role. And future companion India Fisher shows promise for the new eighth Doctor audio's in this, her Big Finish debut.

The story itself, brought to us by former TV script editor Andrew Cartmel, is well paced and plotted. I hope we hear more from him as these audio tales continue, he has shown here that he has a flare for this medium.

A very good addition to the range and an interesting alien species. Good to hear in an audio adventure that the characters were not trying to describe in detail what they could all 'see'. The Spillagers were simply described as hideous. Enough said.
