“You are an enemy of the German people and you will be dealt with as such!”
The TARDIS has landed in some dangerous places during the years the Doctor has been piloting the craft. But few can be more dangerous than the courtyard of Colditz Castle in the year 1944.
The Doctor and Ace are swiftly captured. She is placed among the British officers, who are planning an escape, while a scientific expert keeps the Doctor separately, awaiting interrogation.
Who is the mysterious Klein? How can she know so much about the Doctor and his TARDIS? And will Ace succeed in her escape attempt, or will she pay the ultimate price?
I heard a lot of negative reactions to this play before I actually listened to it, but I must say that it isn't as bad as it is painted.
The plot starts as a pretty straightforward prisoner of war drama, with stereotypical Germans and British officers with stiff upper lips and daring escape plans. But somewhere along the way it twists, becoming a play about alternative futures.
Sylvester and Sophie give decent performances throughout, though this partnership is in danger of becoming stale with too much use. They need something to shake them up a bit, this tale might just be the start of that process.
The guest cast don't particularly stand out, as I mentioned above they are mostly your stereotype POW characters. The only one who gives more than average is Tracey Childs as Klein, the Nazi with the mysterious past who knows so much about the Doctor. She plays her role just right, not quite the 'mad scientist', not quite the unthinking Nazi drone.
It is the twists that make the play for me. They are the intriguing part of the story and there is potential there for further fiction, though I'm not sure if it would be a prequel, a sequel or a sideways step!
Who veteran author Steve Lyons has managed to craft an interesting script, one that draws the listener in and keeps their attention through to the end. While it isn't spectacular, this is still good drama and worthy of merit.
