THE ONE DOCTOR

Cover by Clayton Hickman"The vulgar end of time!"

When the terrible Skelloids menace the Generios system, it is lucky for the inhabitants that the infamous traveller known as the Doctor in on hand to thwart their evil schemes. And all for a very reasonable price.

But when a colourfully dressed stranger starts asking awkward questions, the ‘Doctor’ and his lovely companion Sally-Anne decide it is time to scarper, just to be on the safe side.

Before they can make good their escape though an alien object appears in the skies above the people of Generios. It sets them a number of challenges that only the Doctor can possibly solve. With time running out though, it is a shame there is only one Doctor. Or is there?

This is a fantastically funny adventure, featuring a number of brilliantly amusing performances from a cast that includes a number of established comedy favourites.

Head and shoulders above them all though is the wonderful Christopher Biggins as intergalactic conman Banto Zame. Doctor Who has always had its fair share of loveable rouges (Iain Cuthbertson's Garron springs to mind) but Zame is in a class of his own. Biggins brings him to life with wit and style and his dialogue with Colin is energetic and makes the play in many ways. The excellent script by Gareth Roberts and Clayton Hickman give them plenty of chance to battle with words whenever they are together at the microphone.

Almost their match is the duo of companions, Bonnie Langford in her familiar role of Mel and Clare Buckfield as Sally-Anne Stubbins. Lots of opportunities between them for bitchy comments as they each get stranded with the other's ‘Doctor’.

There are sideswipes along the way at TV DIY shows and quizzes, with The Weakest Link especially getting some stick. Again it is the quality of the writing that brings out the best in the performers.

But for all that, the one thing that made me fall about laughing like nothing else was the sound of the Stardis dematerialising! I defy anybody to listen to that without at least a chuckle.

So, a comedy fest for all Who fans. Recommended for anybody who likes a laugh.
