"Ya know Doc, this could be the continuation of a beautiful friendship..."
Frobisher has decided to leave the TARDIS and go back to his private detective roots. Despite the Doctor's continued visits to try and tempt him back, he's determined to stick at it.
But after weeks of mundane cases, he's almost ready to give in. Then the lovely Alicia Mulholland drops a hot case into his lap.
But when his investigation brings him face to face with big businessman Josiah W. Dogbolter, it seems this could be Frobisher's last case. Ever!
This is a fun addition to the Big Finish range, with larger than life performances from the entire cast. Colin Baker gives a brilliant turn as Frobisher's Doctor persona, while Robert Jezek handles the penguin part, including the witty narration.
Of the guest cast Toby Longworth shines as Dogbolter, playing him like The Fast Show's Roly Birkin, but understandable at least. Jane Goddard makes a very credible femme fatale, while having a character called Chandler (played by Alistair Lock) is a nice touch.
The Maltese Penguin isn't meant to be taken seriously, working well as a pastiche of 1950's detective movies. In that respect it does exactly what it says on the tin!
