OMEGA

The Sector of Forgotten Souls. The place where Omega detonated the star that gave Rassilon the power of time travel. And one of the most popular tourist spots on the Jolly Chronolidays schedule.

However, the latest shuttle full of holidaymakers are in for more than a few surprises this time around. Including the passenger in seat 6E, who seems very concerned that Omega is about to put in a very real appearance. A passenger calling himself the Doctor.

And when a re-enactment of Omega's final hours ends in tragedy, it seems the Doctor is right and one of Gallifrey's greatest heroes, and villains, is about to return!

While at times Omega does seem to be the audio equivalent of a traditional Who story (lots of running around with little point to it) there are moments during the production that do make you smile or at least bring an exclamation of surprise from the listener.

Ian Collier returns as the titular villain of the piece, nicely toned down for the audio medium. He puts in a fine performance, eclipsing his previous outing of twenty years ago. This is an Omega apparently weary of schemes to infiltrate our universe and gain revenge on the Time Lords. This time he just wants to go home and be with his intended wife.

Yes, I said intended wife! That is one of the twists of the story, that Omega actually gets to fall in love. I won't reveal here with whom, but you may well be able to guess from the cast list and I can't say I fault his taste!

Also worthy of note among the guest cast is veteran British horror actress Caroline Munro playing stewardess with a secret Sentia. She gives good substance to a role that could have easily become a cliché.

Peter Davison is on top form in this story, one that stretches him in unexpected ways throughout. And the part three cliffhanger is another of those moments I mentioned earlier, that leaves you thinking 'That was a very good twist'.

As a whole, this play is pretty average, indeed I fell asleep during part two and had to listen to most of it again! But those little twists do make it interesting and worth the listening time, as do the performances of the three stars of the show.
