THE TWILIGHT KINGDOM
by Will Shindler

Reviewed by Mark Simpson

Cover by Steve Johnson"You look lost, Doctor."

Having left Light City behind them, the Doctor, Charley and C'rizz are now journeying through a jungle zone, trying to locate the TARDIS. But they are not the only searchers out in the wilderness.

They soon find themselves captured by Major Koth's rebel army. However, all is not as it seems in the underground stronghold. C'rizz quickly gives up his peace principles to join the fighting force, while Charley is only too happy to betray the Doctor.

What is the real secret of the caverns? How can Koth be in two or more places at once? And could it be that after all this time, the Doctor has finally met a foe he cannot defeat?

This play brings to a close the current season of 8th Doctor stories. Overall the four plays presented have been a pretty mixed bunch and The Twilight Kingdom embodies that perfectly.

In the sleeve notes author Will Shindler comments that this is a rather more traditional Who story. It is something of a shame then that of the four plays in this season, the traditional ones are the weaker ones.

The cast are good but not outstanding. Paul and India are as good as ever and Conrad is fitting into the team well. Of the guests though only Michael Keating, Alan Rothwell and Anna Carus-Wilson make a real impact. Foremost among these is Keating, who gives us a quiet, studied portrayal of a rebel leader.

The plot is quite ordinary, certainly nothing to write home about, which is a shame from a first time author. However, there are enough good touches to show that Will Shindler deserves a second crack at writing for Big Finish, probably for one of the earlier Doctor's next time.

So, this is good, but no cigar.
